Sakari Famous has added to her growing reputation by earning Southland Conference honours.

The McNeese State University high jumper has been named on the 2024 Southland Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field All-Conference First Team and was awarded the outdoor Conference Athlete of the Week accolade.

Famous, 24, made the All-Conference First Team after successfully clearing 1.80 metres indoors at the LSU Purple Tiger meet in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in January, which eclipsed her school (1.79 metres) and national record (1.77 metres).

The Bermudian then lowered those marks after successfully clearing 1.81 metres at the the McNeese State Indoor Meet in Lake Charles, Louisiana, also in January.

Famous was named Athlete of the Week after claiming the gold medal with a season-best outdoor effort of 1.80 metres at the ULL Louisiana Classic, which was hosted by the University of Louisiana this month.

“We are really excited and pleased for Sakari,” Bermuda National Athletics Association president Freddie Evans told The Royal Gazette.

“We’ve already talked about her devastating injury and to come back, not only just healthy, but with the kind of athletic exploits that has made her All-Conference, has made her Conference champion and has got her to jump past her personal best and set a new school and a new Bermuda record is just totally amazing.”

Famous has made a remarkable comeback from a stress fracture to her back which prevented her from competing at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, last October.

“I am really pleased and just hope it all can continue for her,” Evans added.

The former Junior Female Athlete of the Year award winner, six-times Carifta Games champion and Commonwealth Youth Games bronze medal-winner was back in action at the weekend, picking up bronze with a best effort of 1.70 metres in the Victor Lopez Classic, which was hosted by Rice University.
