Bermuda Pacers come away from Toronto meet with impressive medal haul

Bermuda Pacers Track Club did the island proud after coming away from the Flying Angels International Track and Field Championships in Toronto with 25 medals, including ten golds, and a new meet record.

Pacers head coach Cal Simons hailed the club’s brilliant showing at York University’s Track and Field Centre last weekend.

“The club coaches were extremely pleased by the performances of all the athletes and were not surprised by their results,” he said.

“The team totally fulfilled the expectations of the coaching team.”

Simons was also pleased with the performances of those athletes who were making their debut at the championships.

“They handled themselves very well and were not overwhelmed by the size of the event,” he said.

“This performance can also be described as a total team effort by the athletes, coaches and parents who came to support the event.”

Giselle Reid Rubaine, the youngest of the 39 athletes representing the local club, led the charge with four individual medals.

She earned gold in the under-9 girls 100 and 200 metres and silver in the 800 and long jump on the way to being crowned outstanding female athlete in her age group.

Sukanya Jobson, Azari Jones, Jaeda Grant and Nasir Johnson were also gold- medal winners.

Jobson was victorious in the under-13 girls 400 and Jones in the under-16 girls 3,000 metres. Grant picked up the win in the under-18 girls 3,000 and 1,500 metres, while Johnson came home first in the under-15 boys 400 metres with a personal best time of 54.48sec.

Ava St Luce, Raina Robinson, Lashae Jones, Azari Jones, Jemani Scott and Paz Lightbourne-Francis all won individual silver medals.

St Luce won her silverware in the under-13 girls high jump, with Robinson picking up her two silvers in the under-15 girls 3,000 and 800 metres. Lashae Jones finished second in the under-16 girls 200 metres as did Azari Jones in the under-16 girls 800 metres. Jemani Scott and Lightbourne-Francis won silver medals in the under-13 boys 400 and 100 metres respectively.

Earning bronze medals were Ava Clark Trott in the long jump, Jobson in the under- 13 girls 800 metres, Azari Jones in the under-16 girls 800 metres and Ajani Trott in the under-13 boys 100 metres.

Bermuda Pacers also enjoyed success in the relay events with the under-13 girls sprint medley team of Jobson, Leydi Raynor, Jasmine Reid Rubaine and Amaya Davis setting a new meet record in a time of 4min 36.29sec.

The under-15 girls 4 x100 team of Zahkya Scott, Zaria Codrington, Zyari Lawrence and Sarai Minors and the under-17 girls sprint medley and 4 x 100 team of Lashea Jones, Hannah Dill, Dallas Hunt and LeiLani Peters also secured medals.

The local club’s under-13 boys sprint medley team of Jemani Scott, Lightbourne-Francis, Ajani Trott and Ronan Davidge earned a silver medal as did the under-15 boys and girls mixed 4 x 400 team of Johnson, Evan Andrade, Peters and Codrington.

Also earning a trip to the podium was the under-13 girls 4 x100 metres relay team of Davis, Jasmine Reid Rubaine, St Luce and Raynor after securing a bronze medal.
