Carifta Games Sunday track finals round-up

Amaris Munya earned a spot in the under-17 800 metres final

Cameron Adkins was denied a second Carifta Games medal by less than a second after he finished fourth in the under-17 boys 3,000 metres on Sunday night.

Adkins, who won the silver medal in the 1,500 metres 24 hours earlier, was in a battle for the bronze medal during the latter stages of the race and looked to be in pole position to claim another spot on the podium with 200 metres to run.

But Guyana’s Ebo Shefir McNeil found a second wind to pass Adkins with just ten metres left to run, denying Bermuda a fourth medal at the Carifta Games.

Adkins crossed the line in 9min 23.01sec and was less than a second behind the third-placed runner. The race was won by Christopher Sammy, of Trinidad & Tobago, who beat Adkins to gold in the 1,500 metres on Saturday. Bermuda’s Sanchez Smith finished sixth in 10:07.59.

The boys under-20 4x100 metres relay team finished a good sixth.

It’s shaping up to be a huge Monday night on the track as Amaris Munya and Surii Russell made it into the under-17 800m boys and girls finals respectively.

Munya finished third in 2:20.12 in her semi-final to secure her finals spot, while Russell sprinted to the line to secure the runner-up spot and automatic qualification in his semi-final, with the fifth-fastest time. Their finals take place on Monday evening.

Miles Outerbridge also has a medal chance on Monday in the 200 metres final after winning his semi-final in style in the opening session on Sunday.
