Government hopes to resume Harbour Road works ‘shortly’

Discussions between the Government and a landowner that has stalled wall repairs on Harbour Road works are expected to be resolved “shortly”.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works said discussions had been productive and it was hoped work would resume soon.

He added: “Provided we can reach an agreement with the landowners this work will take only three weeks to complete.”

The spokesman also said that the Ministry had decided against using a marine contractor to assist with the project because of the additional costs.

He said: “The budget for these works is $250,000.

“Using a barge was considered but at $8,000 per day this would have doubled the cost of the works and was not therefore considered a viable option.

“To date $160,000 has been spent of the total budget and save for extended use of necessary traffic controls, no additional spending has been incurred.”

Work to repair a stretch of wall on Harbour Road between Highwood Lane and Lover’s Lane started in June and was scheduled for completion in early August.

But a spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works said last month that the project had suffered “significant delays” because of bad weather and an property dispute, although he did not release details.

The One Bermuda Alliance criticised the Government’s handling of the project earlier this week and said the property dispute should have been addressed before work began.
