Yacht makes landfall safely

A sailboat that lost contact with officials en route to Canada has been located with everyone on board safe.

The Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre was called to assist Canadian and US authorities with broadcast inquiries at sea after Strange Situation — a 50ft sloop that left Bermuda for Lunenberg, Nova Scotia on May 16 — had not been heard from.

An incident report from Bermuda Maritime Operations said: “The passage was estimated to take around one week. However, Strange Situation had not yet arrived or otherwise made contact.”

On Friday night friends of the sailors on board the vessel received text messages stating that the yacht was about 20 miles from shore and 80 miles from its destination.

As a result, the search was called off, with the Canadian Coast Guard to escort the yacht to port.
