Belco has warned motorists that workers are set to continue trenching work on Harrington Sound Road in Smith’s on Monday.

The project, set to continue until September 9, involves opening up holes to pull cables through the newly installed conduits.

A Belco spokesman said: “There will be a temporary single-lane road closure.

“Work will take place between the hours of 9am to 6pm and traffic control measures will be in place.

“Motorists are advised to use alternative routes on North Shore Road or South Road while the work takes place.”

The spokesman said that Belco was in the process of replacing 40 per cent of its underground transmission cables, which are more than 50 years old.

“Nearly 25 per cent of our cables have served Bermuda for over 60 years,” he added.

“These cables and other transmission and distribution assets are well beyond their useful lifespans, causing a higher number of faults, system vulnerability and higher maintenance costs.”

The public is encouraged to check the trenching updates and information including advisories for road users on Belco’s website at belco.bm.
