Work under way on Canal Road underpass
Work has started on an underpass and road which has been closed for more than a year, The Royal Gazette has learned.
Sunrise Construction, hired by the Government, has begun to replace the struts built along Canal Road in Pembroke, across from the WER Joell Tennis Stadium, during a project expected to take about 90 days.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works said that Sunrise Construction began work at the start of October and completed test digs that helped them to finalise their repair plan.
The spokesman added: “The contract is to last until the work is completed to the ministry’s satisfaction and then a 365-day defect liability period will follow.
“With work having just started, the project remains on schedule, with a completion month of late January to early February.”
The Government closed the one-way road, which runs under Cedar Avenue, after part of a wall collapsed last March.
The public works ministry put out a request for quotations in May and asked contractors to demolish and replace the old struts with reinforced versions.
Sunrise Construction was later chosen and reached an agreement with the Government on June 27.
Long lead items have been ordered to help to reinforce the struts.
