A portion of Cemetery Road will be temporarily closed this weekend when Belco starts to demolish its eastern stack tower, a spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works said.

The work is scheduled to take place on Saturday for four hours.

Alternative rain dates were set for March 26, March 28 and April 1 if conditions are unfavourable on Saturday.

The ministry spokesman said: “For the safety of the public, Cemetery Road will be closed between the Eco Pest and Gorham's lumber yard driveway.

“The travelling public will be able to visit Eco Pest Ltd via Cemetery Road coming off of Serpentine Road only.

“The travelling public wanting to visit the Gorham's lumber yard will be able to use Cemetery Road via St John's Road only.”

Traffic controls will be in place in the area.

Demolition works at Belco began last September in the wake of the completion of the North Power Station, which allowed several engines to be retired in November 2020.

The ministry also announced that a section of Somerset Road near the junction with Scaur Hill Drive in Sandys will be temporarily reduced to one lane early next month.

The closure – expected to last from April 3 to June 9 – is intended to allow wall repairs to take place opposite the property at 119 Somerset Road.

“Working hours will be from 7.30am to 4pm,” the spokesman said.

“Traffic controls will be under the direction of the Ministry of Public Works and will be managed through traffic control signs and traffic lights.

“The Ministry of Public Works wishes to encourage the full co-operation of the public and apologises for any inconvenience that may result.”
