The Bermuda Road Safety Council has urged drivers to obey all traffic signs on the island’s roads to prevent collisions.

A BRSC spokesman said: “[The signs] represent rules that are in place to keep you safe and to help communicate messages to drivers and pedestrians.

“The BRSC would like to encourage all of the motoring public, including pedestrians, to familiarise yourselves with the traffic signs, what they mean and the rules of the road.”

The Transport Control Department handbook, which can be found in “Related Media”, lists five types of road traffic signs on the island.

They include signs giving orders such as “Do Not Enter”, which are placed inside red circles; warnings, such as a pedestrian crossing ahead, which are mostly triangular; and rectangular ones that provide information, such as “Detour”.

There are also direction signs, which are mostly rectangular and ones giving positive instructions, such as where motorists should turn when exiting a parking lot. These signs are placed in blue circles.

The spokesman added: “As we continue to advocate for safer roads, we remind the motoring public to reduce their speeds, drive with care and caution and don’t drink and drive.”
