Police: rains damage roads and make driving more dangerous
Police are warning motorists to exercise caution as heavy rainfall has damaged roads and made driving dangerous.
A spokesman warned that several vehicles had stalled while trying to navigate around large puddles in the roads.
He added: “The heavy rainfall has also resulted in erosion to sections of roadway, creating potholes in a number of areas where they previously did not exist and making worse others that were present before the rains.
“Again, please exercise caution as you and other motorists try to avoid these while traversing the roads on your commute this morning and during the day with the forecast being for continued wet conditions.“
Thursday: some sunshine developing after a likely cloudy start. Winds southwesterly moderate, gradually backing southerly light to moderate overnight, possibly becoming variably light. High near 78F (26C) low near 71F (22C).
Friday: sunny breaks with the risk of a few showers. Winds south-southeasterly light to moderate, increasing moderate later. High near 76F (24C), low near 70F (21C).
Saturday: sunny periods with a few showers likely. Winds southerly moderate, tending to veer south-southwesterly light to moderate later. High near 77F (25C), low near 71F (22C).
The Ministry of Public Works advised the public to use “utmost caution” while travelling, particularly to reduce speed and keep distance between vehicles while driving.
A ministry spokesman said these practices would help motorists maintain control on the road and minimise accidents.
He added: “Our dedicated teams are working diligently to assess and address the damages as quickly as possible.
“However, until the necessary repairs are completed, it is crucial that drivers remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of others.”
