The Ministry of Public Works is reassessing the state of the roads and a review is under way to find additional funds to fix them.

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, said that the ministry had received more than 100 complaints about potholes since May.

He thanked members of the public for their patience while teams continued to address the potholes, which he said had been made worse by recent heavy rainfall.

He also made clear that the issue was not caused by staff vacancies within the Department of Works and Engineering.

Colonel Burch said: “The ministry is reassessing the state of all roads in the island. This review will identify the state of all roads — public and private — the cost of repairs and repaving, and will identify additional funds that can be used to increase the pace of road-paving planned for this year and next.

“I navigate the same roads as everyone else, experiencing the bumps and potholes at first hand. After upgrading our infrastructure through extensive trenching, I look forward to increased permanent road-paving.

“I should note that the repairs are not being delayed due to staff vacancies but rather the sheer volume of potholes that have formed in such a short period.”

A ministry spokesman said Colonel Burch wished to address “the perception that potholes reappear quickly after repairs”.

The minister said: “It is worth noting that some of the re-emerged potholes are a result of older repairs from two or three years ago.

“These older repairs are more susceptible to damage from the heavy rains we have experienced recently. We are prioritising these areas to ensure the longevity of restorations in the future.”

However, in an on-camera interview with Bermuda Broadcasting Company last month, Colonel Burch said of the high rainfall levels: “As fast as we can patch them, they are washing them up again.”

He also said in that interview: “You will not see a dramatic improvement probably in a year.”
