Speeding tickets soar for June compared with May

Police have reported a decline in serious-injury, slight-injury and damage-only collisions during the second quarter of this year compared with the first, but a rise in fatal collisions from four to six.

There were also 140 arrests for impaired driving in the first six months of 2023, compared with 95 for the same period last year.

Speeding, which ranged from 58km/h to 90km/h, was the top ticketed traffic offence for June, at 188 tickets — up 110 from the previous month.

Police reported 330 traffic tickets issued in June, up from 284 issued in May.

There was a slight drop in written warnings given to drivers, with 48 given in June compared with 50 in May.

Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell, of the tactical operations division, said that there were 275 parking tickets issued by police in June.

The figure rose significantly from the 175 parking tickets handed out in May.
