Motorists are being urged to exercise caution on the roads during the summer months.

The Bermuda Road Safety Council said that there is an increase in traffic at this time of year and motorists needed to prioritise safety.

The organisation has launched a campaign with the theme “Chance Takers Are Accident Makers”, which emphasises the importance of adhering to traffic laws and avoiding risky manoeuvres or stunts on public roads.

A BRSC spokesman said: “College students have returned from summer break, families are enjoying vacations and visitors are exploring various places of interest. Consequently, there is a noticeable rise in traffic on our roads during this time.

“As the warm weather increases activity and traffic on our roads, all road users must prioritise safety and exercise caution.

“Driving dangerously or without due care and attention is illegal and poses a significant risk to oneself and other road users. Dangerous driving refers to operating a motor vehicle well below the expected standard of a competent and cautious driver, endangering lives.”

Examples of dangerous driving include speeding, racing, aggressive driving, disregarding traffic signals and signs, overtaking recklessly and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including prescription medications.

Careless or inconsiderate driving occurs when a driver falls below the minimum expected standard of competence and consideration for other road users.

Some examples of careless or inconsiderate driving are overtaking on the inside, tailgating, distracted driving — for example, when using a mobile phone — and turning into the path of another vehicle.

The spokesman said: “By engaging in unsafe behaviours on the road, individuals not only put themselves at risk but also endanger others. We implore all road users to refrain from such actions.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to drivers and riders who prioritise safe driving, as their actions contribute to the overall safety of our roads.

“The BRSC urges all motorists to prioritise travel safety as we approach the Cup Match holiday. If you are planning an event or a party, we strongly encourage implementing a transportation plan to ensure your guests can arrive and depart safely.

“If you plan to consume alcohol, make responsible arrangements for your transportation in advance.

“The BRSC wishes everyone a safe summer and Cup Match. We remind all road users to drive with care and caution, refrain from drinking and driving, and maintain a reasonable speed. By working together, we can ensure safer roads for everyone.”
