The Bermuda Road Safety Council has urged all motorists to not drink and drive.

This message comes a week after the latest Operation Vega statistics were released, which revealed that 162 motorists were arrested for impaired driving on the island from January 1 to August 7.

These figures are an increase from 145 arrests made for the same offence during the same period last year.

A BRSC spokeswoman said: “As summer festivities surge into full swing — including concerts, parties and cricket matches — alcohol consumption escalates.

“While individuals have the liberty to enjoy a drink, we emphasise the importance of acting responsibly.

“There is absolutely no justification for getting behind the wheel while under the influence.”

According to the spokeswoman, people who plan to drink alcohol can get home via minibuses, taxis, Hitch ride services or by using a designated sober driver.

The spokeswoman added: “These alternatives underscore responsible decision-making that ultimately contributes to the safety of our roads.”

She also highlighted that being under the influence of any mind-altering substance, including alcohol, while driving is considered an offence.

She concluded: “We continue to remind the motoring public to drive with care and caution, slow down and don’t drink and drive.”
