Speed cameras not yet in use on Bermuda’s roads
Speed cameras are not in operation on Bermuda’s roads, despite rumours to the contrary.
A spokeswoman for the Ministry of National Security said in a statement this afternoon that it was aware of online imagery and comments about “speed-trap cameras”.
While she said that such cameras were not in use in Bermuda, she added that it was expected that it would be implemented as a future step in the planned improvements to the island’s CCTV system.
The spokeswoman said: “As a reminder, our CCTV initiative is one of our Throne Speech pledges. As the ministry has stated in numerous announcements, most recently October 2023, the installation of the new CCTV system continues and is well advanced towards completion.”
The implementation of the island-wide CCTV cameras has been delayed. More than a third of a new CCTV system has been installed, with a completion date for the network set for the end of April, but it had been hoped that the new system would be installed before the end of 2023.
The spokeswoman added: “We’re very excited about its progress and anticipate updating the public about this project in the near future.
“As we previously shared, this CCTV system will provide enhanced capabilities, such as licence plate recognition, and it precedes the installation of speed cameras.
“It’s expected that speed cameras will form part of the new CCTV system. However, that is another aspect that will be implemented as part of the project’s next steps.”
The spokeswoman urged motorists to be responsible on the island’s roads: “Please slow down, please be mindful of others on our roads and above all, please exercise care, courtesy and caution.”
