A road sign honouring the memory of a St George’s resident whose family was embroiled in a legal dispute over right of access has been placed on what was formerly the family’s property.

Shirley Granville Gibbons, who died last summer, is memorialised on the golf cart path of the Five Forts Golf Course, which used to be part of the Gibbons family’s property.

The legal battle with Hotelco, the owner of the golf course and the St Regis resort, was settled with the Government purchasing the strip of land.

The naming ceremony on Thursday at Secretary Lane in St George’s was attended by Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the public works minister, with Gardene Gibbons, the widow of Mr Gibbons, and area MPs Renée Ming and Lovitta Foggo.

The thoroughfare is now the Shirley Granville Gibbons Way.

Colonel Burch said: “Through this unveiling, we not only honour Mr Shirley Gibbons, a notable St Georgian, but also reflect on the strength and resilience of a family known and respected within the community.

"It is with a heavy heart that we remember Mr Gibbons, who left us before seeing this day. However, in this sign, his memory and contributions to our community will for ever be etched into the landscape of St George's."

Colonel Burch called the installation “a meaningful tribute to his legacy”.

“Although Mr Gibbons is not with us to witness this, we hope his spirit will continue guiding residents and visitors along this path.”

Mrs Gibbons thanked the gathering, along with Quinelle Francis, the Mayor of St George and a surveyor, and Phil Perinchief, the family’s lawyer.
