Precarious turn on St David’s Road claims another car
A woman was rescued from her car after she veered off the road and crashed into the sea at a notorious turn on St David’s Road.
A police officer saw the vehicle go over the verge into the waters of Stocks Harbour at about 12.30pm yesterday. It is believed to be the fifth accident there this year.
The officer went into the water to help the 66-year-old St George’s woman until the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service arrived.
The driver, who was not seriously hurt, was treated for at the scene for a hand injury by BFRS emergency medical technicians.
A spokesman added: “Once again, motorists travelling through this area of St David’s Road are reminded to use caution, particularly when the roads are wet.”
Witnesses were asked to call Constable Rhonda Pitt on 717-2120, or to e-mail rpitt@bps.bm.
The heavily damaged vehicle could be seen partially in the sea where the waterside verge of the main road was partially collapsed.
An area resident called it a frequent accident spot.
“This has to be the fourth one in the last several months,” he said. “It's always been slippery here and people don't drive slowly any more either.”
A police source said that “several reports” had been made to the Ministry of Public Works about the location, which was said to be the scene of at least 16 accidents going back to 2015.
Last month, a 22-year-old female rider was taken to hospital after losing control of her motorcycle while heading west.
In response to earlier queries from The Royal Gazette, police said both four-wheeled vehicles and motorcycles had encountered difficulties on the stretch of road.
The surface of the westbound turn, which is on a downhill slope, is visibly deteriorated.
Police added: “Road traffic investigations have determined the road surface in that area is a contributing factor, particularly during wet weather.”
Police said they were making arrangements for the damaged car to be removed from the shoreline.
