Cruise ships make emergency diversions to Bermuda
Medical emergencies caused two cruise ships to divert to Bermuda within 24 hours, with three passenger evacuations in total.
The Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre reported that the Odyssey of the Seas visited the island’s shores yesterday to drop off a 31-year-old male crew member who required medical attention.
The ship, which was on its way from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Ponta Delgada in the Azores, arrived in local waters at 7pm. The Indonesian crew member was taken to Ordnance Island by the pilot and rescue boat St George and escorted via ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
Another medical emergency involving a 74-year-old female passenger from Belgium caused the vessel to return to the island’s waters at 5am today.
BMOC also reported that the Oasis of the Seas, which was going from Miami, Florida, to Cadiz, Spain, arrived in local waters at 1am to drop off a 69-year-old passenger from the United States who needed medical attention.
The passenger was taken to Ordnance Island and escorted safely to KEMH.
