Designs revealed for new fast ferries under construction
New renderings released by the Ministry of Transport offer a glimpse at the design of two new fast ferries, expected to enter service by the end of next year.
It was announced in February that Strategic Marine, a Singapore-based firm, had won a $19.5 million contract to build the new 550-passenger ferries.
A keel-laying ceremony was held in Singapore last month, with the ships expected to start work within 18 months.
Wayne Furbert, the Minister of Transport, said the investment was a testament to the Government’s commitment to modernising public transport.
Mr Furbert said: “This purchase will replace the JE Cecil Smith and Warbaby Fox ferries and is a significant step towards meeting the increasing demand for efficient and sustainable transportation options.
“With their advanced features and increased capacity, these new vessels signify a substantial investment in maritime infrastructure and promise to revolutionise the commuting experience.
“They will significantly improve marine connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors.”
A spokeswoman for the ministry said the contract came after a “robust” procurement process.
“Strategic Marine has the expertise to design and build vessels that meet the highest safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability standards.”
The Royal Gazette recently contacted the Ministry for an update on the introduction of digital media, which was expected to be rolled out this month.
A spokeswoman responded that Mr Furbert would provide an update on the project soon and that the media would be informed.
The Warbaby Fox and JL Cecil Smith came into service in 2006 and 2007 respectively, with both vessels built in Bridgeport, Connecticut, by Derecktor Shipyards and carrying up to 350 passengers.
Mr Furbert has said the older ferries could potentially be sold.
