Taxi operators now able to have meters adjusted

Taxi drivers needing meter calibration are being reminded to visit the Transport Control Department in Hamilton to have their equipment adjusted.

An increase in taxi fares went ahead in April despite updates to payment meters being postponed.

The Ministry of Transport said at the time that a contractor hired to recalibrate the payment meters suffered “technical and programming issues”.

TCD advised that the vendor, who could not make the necessary adjustments in April, has since resolved the issue.

A spokesman for TCD said: "Most vehicles with incorrect rates have been addressed. However, approximately 100 vehicles still need the corrected rate adjustment.

“The equipment to fix the incorrect rate four and 'waiting times' rate is now available at TCD. Taxis equipped with digital meters remain unaffected by the technical constraints faced by standard meters.

"The department strongly advises that vehicles with the incorrect rate four to come to have the work completed as soon as possible.“

Taxi operators can visit TCD during business hours starting tomorrow to have their meters programmed.
