Shorelink team awarded for public service
The team behind the development of a digital fare system for public transport was honoured for its work in the face of difficulty.
The Digital Fare Media Team was recognised with the Public Service Excellence Award on Friday by David Burt for modernising the island’s transport system through the Shorelink app and website.
Shorelink, which was launched in July, allows users to buy fares digitally and view the status of public transport in real time.
The Premier said: “The Shorelink initiative marks a significant organisational change for Bermuda, paving the way for future digital advancements as the Government promised to do by utilising technology to modernise services and make them more efficient and customer-friendly.
“Our public transportation service is now equipped to serve a new generation of passengers, thanks to the dedication and innovation of the Digital Fare Media Team.
“I thank them for their diligent work in ensuring the Government delivered on this promise while setting a new benchmark for public service with this groundbreaking achievement.”
A government spokeswoman said that the team faced an array of problems during development, including tight deadlines and limited resources, as well as technical hurdles throughout the process.
The initial launch was delayed for about a month to allow for proper staff training, only to face further challenges, including French being its default language.
Despite this, the spokeswoman said, the Shorelink team worked hard to co-ordinate stakeholders across the Government and tourism industry.
She added: “They demonstrated exceptional leadership, critical thinking and problem-solving skills pivotal to overcoming the obstacles to delivering this product that benefits the local community and Bermuda's reputation overseas as a first-class tourist destination.”
Cherie Whitter, the Head of the Public Service, said: “The Digital Fare Media Team has truly demonstrated the best of Bermuda's public service with this exciting development.
“Their work not only improves the efficiency of our public transportation system but streamlines administrative processes and procedures.
“Well done and congratulations to this phenomenal team.”
The roll-out of Shorelink will continue next month with the introduction of tap-and-go payments.
The team consists of Zaynab Brown, Warren Simmons, Jonathan Cassidy, Shivon Washington, Roger Todd, Troy Bassett, Jacqueline Bremar, Jonelle Christopher, Mannard Packwood, Miquel Bailey, Khandi Roberts, David Simmons, Chris Spencer, Rudy Cann, Terry Spencer, Theresa Ince, Yolanda Dyer, Jeanne Morris and Tina Evans.
