A 50-year-old man involved in a crash in St George’s over the weekend has died, police confirmed on Monday.

Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, gave condolences to Steve Perinchief, a respected and committed prison officer.

A police spokeswoman said Mr Perinchief was travelling east on Southside Road on August 24 when he lost control of his motorcycle and struck what was believed to be a kerb near the former White’s Supermarket.

Mr Perinchief was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment, but succumbed to his injuries.

He is the fifth person to die on the island’s roads this year.

Mr Weeks said: “It is with deep sadness that I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of corrections officer Steve Perinchief, who tragically passed away from injuries sustained in a road traffic accident over the weekend.

“Corrections officer Perinchief, who was posted to the Farm Facility, was a dedicated member of the Department of Corrections for 21 years, having worked at all three corrections facilities.

“He was well respected and appreciated by his fellow officers and the inmates he worked with, who held him in high regard. He exemplified the mission of the Department of Corrections, and his passing is a loss to the department and the community.”

Mr Weeks said the ministry stood ready to assist Mr Perinchief’s family and others affected by the tragedy.

He added that a ministry support team was helping his colleagues along with inmates through their time of grief.

The Bermuda Police Service offered condolences to Mr Perinchief’s family and encouraged any witnesses to the incident to call the Roads Policing Unit at 211 or e-mail bglasford@bps.bm.
