City: pedestrian safety key in Spurling Hill works
The introduction of a pedestrian island for residents’ safety was among the key features of a remake at a major traffic artery leading in and out of Hamilton.
Upgrades to the Spurling Hill junction were part of a long-term plan to modernise traffic signals and improve road layouts throughout Hamilton, a spokeswoman said.
She added that one of the major improvements at the junction was the introduction of a central pedestrian island between Cavendish Road and Spurling Hill.
“This island makes crossing safer and is fully wheelchair accessible,” she said.
“Before, pedestrians had limited options. They could cross Cavendish Road but had to wait in the middle of the street to cross Spurling Hill.”
She said the carriageways on Cavendish Road and Spurling Hill were also narrowed — in keeping with international best practices — to slow down traffic and improve safety.
Patrick Cooper, city engineer and chief operating officer, said the City worked with international consultants and ensured the design met local and international codes and standards.
He said the City also collaborated with the Government and landowners, adding: “This has been a carefully considered project to ensure safety and efficiency for all road users.”
