Tourist sustains serious injuries when ‘hit’ by bus
An elderly tourist was seriously injured when she was struck by a bus in Hamilton.
A spokesman for the Bermuda Police Service said: “There has been a serious road traffic collision involving a public transportation bus and a pedestrian at the junction of Bermudiana Road and Front Street in the City of Hamilton.
“Details are limited at this time. However, the scene is currently being processed and traffic diversions have been implemented at the junctions of Front and Queen Streets as well Pitts Bay Road and Woodbourne Avenue.”
A witness who was on the bus at the time of the incident said that the woman was crossing Bermudiana Road as the vehicle turned into the road from Front Street.
The witness said he was able to see the woman just a split second before the impact.
He said: “There was a massive noise when the bus hit her and it then felt like it had gone over a bump in the road.
“We all got out expecting the worst.”
The witness said that the pedestrian appeared to have head and leg injuries but was conscious and able to talk to bus passengers who went to her aid.
He said that the woman told them she was 77 years old and visiting Bermuda on a cruise ship.
The witness added: “Fortunately the bus had been stopped at a green traffic light giving way to oncoming traffic before making the turn, so it wasn’t travelling fast.”
