An outage at a Federal Aviation Administration air traffic control centre in New York on Sunday caused several Bermuda flights to be diverted.

According to Skyport, the BermudAir flight from Toronto was diverted to Boston before arriving in Bermuda after 6pm, causing further delays for BermudAir’s later services to and from White Plains, New York.

Additionally, the American Airlines flight from Charlotte returned to Charlotte’s Douglas International Airport and was rescheduled to arrive on Monday.

An Air Canada flight that had departed for Toronto returned to Bermuda and ultimately left again at 3.39pm once the FAA system was restored.

Delta’s flight to New York John F Kennedy International Airport and the United Airlines flight to Newark were on the ground in Bermuda at the time of the outage and experienced delayed departures.

A spokeswoman for Skyport said: “A system outage at the Federal Aviation Administration’s New York Air Route Traffic Control Centre on Sunday briefly interrupted flights over the North Atlantic, impacting several flights to and from Bermuda’s LF Wade International Airport.

“Though there was the potential for multiple flights to divert to the island due to the outage, the FAA resolved the system in just over an hour, negating the possibility.”
