Airport radar offline for maintenance
Airlines could expect some delays during busier air traffic over the next five days as the radar at LF Wade International Airport undergoes maintenance.
According to the Bermuda Airport Authority, the project involves replacing an antenna at the surveillance facility.
The BAA said the radar system was expected to be offline until Monday.
During the work, pilots will use published non-radar operating procedures to navigate in and out of the airport.
It said while the flight procedures provided a safe contingency option, an increased time separation between flights was required, which could lead to some delays during busier air traffic periods.
The radar system is used by the United States Federal Aviation Authority to provide air traffic control services within the Bermuda Terminal Control Area — extending 207 miles from the airport — from the FAA’s control centre on Long Island, New York.
Wayne Furbert, the Minister of Transport, and Vanja Vukota, Acting US Consul General, met BAA and FAA teams at the airport radar site today.
Mr Furbert said he was delighted to welcome the FAA teams to Bermuda to oversee the replacement of the surveillance radar antenna.
Mr Vukota said: “The consulate is proud to support the continued partnership between the FAA and the Bermuda Airport Authority.
“The installation of the new radar antenna will advance the airport’s flight operations.”
The BAA said its engineering team worked closely with the FAA for regular preventive maintenance, system and equipment upgrades, and periodic repairs to equipment.
