Pedestrian crossings to get upgrade

Seeing the light: flashing beacons will be installed on 20 pedestrian crossings throughout the island (File photograph)

Pedestrian crossings across the island are to get an upgrade after the arrival of a shipment of flashing beacons.

The amber lights will be installed at 20 locations, with repairs scheduled at three existing crossings. Additional beacons have been ordered to provide wider coverage across Bermuda.

Installation will begin immediately, starting with replacing the existing pedestrian signal at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo.

That site will receive an upgraded system featuring a continuous green light with an activation red light for pedestrian crossings, alongside three advanced yellow flashing beacons similar to those in place at the Railway Trail crossing near the Harmony Club in Paget.

After this initial upgrade, work will continue at other priority locations, including near the Ice Queen restaurant in Paget, the Paget tunnel and My Lord’s Bay near the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Hamilton Parish.

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, said: “Pedestrians deserve the assurance that crosswalks are properly marked and equipped to alert motorists.

“This initiative reflects the Government's ongoing efforts to improve road infrastructure and deliver on its promise to create safer roadways.

“The installation of these lights is not just about modernisation, it is about ensuring that pedestrians can navigate Bermuda's roads safely and confidently. The ministry is dedicated to rolling out these improvements as efficiently as possible."
