Bailey Bridge upgrades under way
Upgrades to the Bailey Bridge portion of the Causeway are expected to be completed this week, according to the Ministry of Public Works.
Crews are replacing the deck panels of the bridge to enhance safety and improve the overall durability of the structure.
A ministry spokesman said work began last Saturday and the eastbound lane has now been completed. Completion of the westbound lane is expected shortly, weather permitting.
The newly installed panels are designed to last ten to 15 years and include the same anti-skid surface coating as the previous ones, ensuring traction for vehicles in wet weather.
The spokesman said that the bridge has experienced natural wear, and the work was being carried out to ensure safety, reliability and peace of mind for all who use the Causeway.
Jaché Adams, the Minister of Public Works and Environment, said: “This is a key infrastructure improvement that speaks to our commitment to public safety and long-term planning.
“The Bailey Bridge is a vital link for the East End, and ensuring its structural integrity is a top priority for the Government.
“We understand how important this route is for daily commuters and emergency services. Our teams have worked efficiently to complete the eastbound lane, and we appreciate the public's patience as we move ahead with the westbound side."
The ministry also plans to replace steel member components of the bridge, which provide key structural support. The work will not require any lane closures.
Mr Adams added: "We are not just addressing immediate needs — the public will see that we are making smart, forward-thinking upgrades that will serve the public well into the future."
