Rains bring pothole problem back to the surface

Danger zone: weekend rains have caused potholes to erupt (File photograph)

Motorists are advised to be aware of hazardous driving conditions in the wake of yesterday’s heavy downpours.

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Public Works said that driving rain resulted in “large and potentially dangerous” potholes erupting on road surfaces.

The spokeswoman said: “Following the heavy rain this weekend, the ministry is aware of several large and potentially dangerous potholes that have appeared on a number of roads.

“All drivers and pedestrians are urged to exercise extreme caution while travelling along the affected areas.”

The spokeswoman added that a stretch of road along the Elbow Beach Hotel was “particularly concerning”.

She said: “Motorists are encouraged to exercise safety when driving in that area. Commuters should reduce their speed to avoid any hazards.”

The ministry's roadworks and maintenance teams will be addressing any problem areas tomorrow.

According to the Bermuda Weather Service, more than 2.7 inches of rain fell yesterday, most of it coming in a two-hour morning spell.
