Tropical Storm Gordon not a threat to the island

Tropical Storm Gordon is expected to make its closest approach to Bermuda within the next three days on Monday evening — but is not considered a threat to the island at present.

The seventh named storm of the season is forecast to be 1,369 miles from the island at 6pm on Monday, but has the potential to move closer after that.

In its 6pm update, the Bermuda Weather Service reported that the storm has maximum sustained winds of 40mph with gusts of 52mph. It was positioned 1,795 miles east-southeast of the island.

Separately, a small-craft warning has been issued for late tonight through Sunday night, associated with a convergence of low pressure to Bermuda’s west and high pressure to the north.

The BWS said in its online forecast discussion that weather models suggested a low-pressure system could form just to the southwest of Bermuda early on Monday, which could “generate potentially gale-force winds over the island”.

It said model guidance is not “on board” as yet, adding: “Tuesday seems to be a bit drier, with most of the activity further south of Bermuda, while the Global Forecast System still maintains the presence of a weak low-level circulation to our near southwest.

“Winds remain moderate to strong while seas persist moderate to rough in the long term.”

A tropical rainstorm brewing to the west-southwest of the island could bring winds and heavy rainfall to the East Coast of the United States early next week, AccuWeather warned.
