Cabinet shuffle set the tone for a month of political drama
November was a month of political drama, as fresh faces entered the political fray, and Premier Paula Cox made sweeping changes to her Cabinet.One Bermuda Alliance Leader won a landslide victory into Parliament at the Devonshire South Central by-election to replace outgoing MP John Barritt.And new faces entered the Senate on both sides of the political divide with Toni Daniels and Michael Fahy replacing the OBA’s Kathy Michelmore and Craig Cannonier, while Vince Ingham and Diallo Rabain were appointed by the Premier to replace LaVerne Furbert and Cromwell Shakir who were dropped from the Senate.Premier Cox had ended October with a promise to party faithful to “shake things up a bit”. Less than a week later the country had a new look Cabinet featuring reconfigured Ministries and the ouster of Estates Minister Neletha Butterfield and Transport Minister Terry Lister.Less than two weeks after Ms Cox’ shake-up of Cabinet, her new Public Works Minister Walter Roban resigned following a controversy over planning decisions he made on his last day as Environment Minister.The Premier’s Throne Speech was an attempt to tackle the recession head on as it prioritised job creation above other agenda items.But the Opposition labelled the effort “a plan to avoid a plan”.Jahmel Blakeney, 30 and Sanchey Grant, 20, were both convicted of the attempted murder of Renee Kuchler and Shaki Minors at Southside Cinema in November 2009 and sentenced to 30 years each in prison.In non-political news, millions around the world got to see Miss Bermuda, Jana Outerbridge as she vied for the Miss World title in a Gombey inspired costume. Ms Outerbridge did not win the contest but did the Island proud.Elsewhere, reports of prostitutes “discreetly” plying their trade on Front Street did not win the hearts of residents.
