January 3: Bill and Jessica McClure welcomed daughter Sophie into the world at 5.28am, the first baby of the New Year.January 3: After two weeks missing at sea, Bermudians Carlos Rogers and Kwesi Hollis were found 150 nautical miles southeast of Bermuda. The men had not been heard from since December 18. They went missing during a bout of heavy wind and rain which saw gusts of up to 50 knots. They were said to be running low on food and water when found.January 4: Eight students were expelled from Saltus Grammar School after giving a 14-year-old “birthday punches” that landed him in hospital.The injured student had to be taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and treated for a fractured rib, minor concussion and bruising. The parents of the eight expelled students, who filmed the incident, unsuccessfully tried to appeal headteacher Ted Staunton’s decision.January 5: Police arrested a 26-year-old man shortly after a shooting at Warwick Preschool at 12.13pm. No one was seriously injured in the shooting which was the second gun incident in a 24-hour period. A firearm was earlier discovered after an attempted robbery at Belvin’s in Devonshire.January 6: Dennis Lambert, 32, was found dead in his flat in London, UK. Mr Lambert, who battled drug problems, moved to the UK after he was unable to find a job in Bermuda.January 7: Senator Kim Wilson paid a $50 ticket given following a traffic violation involving her Government-issued car. The senator had earlier caused a stir, telling this newspaper the head of wardens was to sort the fine out.January 10: Law firm Conyers, Dill and Pearman made 13 people redundant, including lawyers and support staff. The redundancies followed a string of layoffs across the Island including 17 jobs at Ace Ltd.January 12: Drunk driver Angela Ambrosini was jailed for a year after knocking 16-year-old Shakir Amory off his bike. She was more than two-and-a-half times the legal alcohol limit when her car collided with the CedarBridge Academy student.He suffered “intellectual deficits”, memory loss, fractures to his jaw, collarbone, hip, ribs, two broken legs, a broken wrist, lung damage and lacerations and was in hospital for four months.January 14: Lawyer Charles Richardson launched a constitutional challenge, saying a charge he faced of libelling a policeman on Facebook, breached his constitutional right to freedom of expression. According to Mr Richardson, no one had been charged with criminal defamation in Bermuda for more than 75 years.January 17: Newstead Belmont Hills went into receivership after Butterfield Bank recalled a multimillion dollar loan. A bank spokesman said the company did not take the decision lightly but it was in the best interest of the shareholders and stakeholders.January 21: Two boats were seized, along with a significant quantity of drugs on this date. Five people were arrested including Carlos Rogers and Kwesi Hollis who went missing after leaving the Dominican Republic for Bermuda.January 24: Twenty-year-old Co-Shae Bartrum admitted to importing $657,000 worth of heroin into Bermuda.January 25: Jermaine Pearman, 37, admitted stabbing estranged girlfriend Shakeya DeRoza to death at her home on Paynter Lane in Sandys.Ms DeRoza was a prison officer and mother-of-two. Less than a week later Pearman was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for 25 years.
