March 2011 Timeline

March 1: The year’s second murder victim, Jahmiko LeShore, 26, was shot dead outside his girlfriend’s Boundary Crescent, Devonshire residence. Five were later held by police on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder, which police call a gang-related killing. The case remains under investigation.March 2: The hotly-contested Special Development Order (SDO) for Rosewood Tucker’s Point was passed in a marathon session at the House of Assembly, paving the way for development of Hamilton Parish land viewed by many as precious open space.March 5: The first finished units of Government housing at Southside’s Harbour View Village were opened to families who won a 2005 housing lottery. Richardson Manor, named after school principal Hilton Richardson, became the first house to start taking occupants.March 10: The demolition of King Edward VII Memorial began, with the old entranceway to the 90-year-old facility torn down.March 13: Former MP Barbara Ball died, aged 86. A stalwart of the Bermuda Industrial Union and the Progressive Labour Party, Dr Ball pushed against segregation and championed labour and women’s rights. BIU comrade Ottiwell Simmons recalled her as “one of the real, true gutsy freedom fighters for the people”.March 17: Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, toured Bermuda with Sophie, Countess of Essex. The Royal Couple’s visit, in honour of Duke of Edinburgh Awards participants, featured numerous meetings with the Island’s young people.March 20: Schizophrenia sufferer Shiloh Payne stabbed neighbour Randy Thompson, 58, in broad daylight on Scott’s Hill Road, Sandys.Payne stabbed Mr Thompson with a screwdriver after developing hallucinations from not taking his medication. The 26-year-old was captured the following day and sentenced to indefinite confinement at the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Centre in October.He was later allowed outside for periods of time under the programme, “treatment, not incarceration”.March 25: A 16-year-old boy was shot but survived the attack outside his mother’s home on Rambling Lane, Pembroke. It followed reported gunshots earlier in the night near Cedar Avenue. A shot was fired at bystanders and police on Rambling Lane the next day.March 28: After a two week trial, a jury convicted Antonio Myers for the gun murder in December, 2009 of Kumi Harford. Six months later, Myers was sentenced to 38 years’ imprisonment. Myers and an accomplice shot Mr Harford as he sat in his car on St Monica’s Road.March 30: In another show of grim economic times, Butterfield Bank announced 25 job cuts throughout the company.Butterfield CEO Brad Kopp told The Royal Gazette: “Letting people go in Bermuda was a last resort for us, as we know it’s a very difficult economy right now. We were extremely generous in what we gave people.” The top-ranking employee to be let go was a vice-president.March 31: The month ended as grimly as it began, with 22-year-old Randy Robinson shot dead on Border Lane, Devonshire. The third murder victim of the year, Mr Robinson was the father of a two-year-old son, and a popular North Village Rams footballer.
