Hurricane Chris to pass northwest of Bermuda
Hurricane Chris posed no threat to Bermuda by early evening yesterday.
The storm’s closest point to the island had passed before an update by the Bermuda Weather Service at 6pm.
The storm was 383 miles north of the island with winds around 92mph and higher gusts at the time.
Chris earlier became a Category 2 storm with winds of 105mph, and is the third named storm of the 2018 Atlantic season.
Hurricanes reach Category 2 strength when their winds attain a sustained force of 96 to 110mph.
The US National Hurricane Centre said yesterday: “Chris is moving towards the northeast near 25mph.
“The hurricane is expected to remain on this general heading with an increase in forward speed for the next several days.
“On the forecast track the centre of Chris will pass over or near southeastern Newfoundland Thursday afternoon or evening.”
