Relief from the rain is expected to come, although unsettled conditions are forecast to return later in the week.

Gary Hall, duty forecaster at the Bermuda Weather Service, said: “There are several things going on over the past few weeks, one being a weak Bermuda-Azores high that often acts as a ‘barrier’ and keeps lows and fronts from reaching Bermuda,” he said.

“Additionally, there has been a persistent upper-level low pressure centre over the eastern continental US that has been helping to spawn these surface low-pressure rain-makers we have recently experienced.”

As of last night, the island had recorded 26.66in of rainfall this year, more than 4in above normal, however that figure does not include this morning’s rain.

May proved to be a particularly wet month with a record-setting 12.39in of rainfall.

Conditions were expected to be drier today and tomorrow, with some showers likely on Thursday and a risk of rain on Friday. Mr Hall added that it was hard to say if the wet weather would continue as the month progresses.

“It is rather difficult to say with any certainty, but some of the long-range model data shows signs of the Bermuda-Azores trying to build beginning next week and beyond,” he said. “Obviously that is subject to change as it has not happened as of yet.”
