Tropical depression could pose threat to Bermuda
A tropical depression in the southern Atlantic is inching closer to Bermuda after developing overnight, and could pass over the island next week.
Tropical Depression Four was initially located well to the southeast of Bermuda in the early hours of this morning. At present it is 1,746 nautical miles away.
It is expected to move in a west-northwesterly direction towards Bermuda in the next five days while gathering strength.
A statement on the Bermuda Weather Service, reads: “The Global Forecast System remains the most aggressive model in the forecast of recently formed Tropical Depression Four and has the system passing over or near Bermuda sometime later next week.
“It is way too early to say if this system will have any impact on Bermuda and a very close eye will be continued to be placed on this system.”
According to the latest BWS forecast, the depression could start packing strong tropical storm-force winds over the weekend, and brush past the British Virgin Islands in the early hours of Monday morning.
The forecast predicts that the closest point of approach to the island within the next three days will be 878 nautical miles to Bermuda’s south-southeast at midday on Sunday.
The forecast added: “However, this system may move closer to Bermuda after this time period depending upon its track.”
