Weak Azores high means island susceptible to storms
Striking displays of lightning were captured at the weekend as storms blanketed the island.
Michelle Pitcher, the director of the Bermuda Weather Service, said that the island had become more susceptible to storms after the air system that would typically keep them away had become weaker.
Ms Pitcher explained: “Overall, this summer the Bermuda-Azores High has been weak, allowing for plenty of low pressure systems and weak fronts to impact our area.
“A lot of tropical moisture has been drawn up from the southwest and has been providing plenty of fuel for showers and thunderstorms.”
She added: “We have also been more in-between the lows and high, and as these features converge, it also increases uplift which promotes showers and thunderstorms.”
The BWS said that Saturday saw 19.6 millimetres of rain and yesterday, as of 9am, saw 66mm.
Thursday saw 0.8 millimetres of rain throughout the day and Friday saw no rain. August on average sees about 164mm of rainfall.
Today and tomorrow will see showers with sunny breaks, while Wednesday will have a mix of sun and clouds and Thursday will be cloudy with sunny breaks.
