Tropical Storm Philippe tough to predict, forecasters say

Tropical Storm Philippe formed over the weekend in the central Atlantic but was not ranked a threat to the island by the Bermuda Weather Service.

The US National Hurricane Centre said last night that the storm, which was headed west and forecast to make a northerly turn, would contend with wind shear over the next couple of days.

The NHC added that Philippe’s likely course was proving difficult to predict.

Last night’s BWS forecast had the storm just over 1,000 miles southeast of Bermuda as of 6pm on Wednesday. Philippe had winds topping 50mph.

Two disturbances were also showing potential for development — one in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico and another emerging off the West African coast, south of the Cabo Verde islands.
