Gale-force winds forecast as post-tropical Tammy nears
Tammy has become a post-tropical cyclone but is still forecast to deliver high winds, with the worst conditions expected tomorrow.
The Bermuda Weather Service’s 6am update predicted the system will near the island’s east before it moves away on Saturday.
Tammy’s closest point of approach within the next three days was forecast to be 154 miles to the east at 3pm tomorrow.
The BWS warned the system could move closer after that time depending on its track.
Tammy was about 400 miles east-southeast of Bermuda at 6am today moving north at about 11mph.
Winds were about 86mph with gusts up to 104mph.
A BWS forecaster wrote that “a very broad and strong wind field remains between [Tammy] and a robust ridge of high pressure towards the north-northwest of Bermuda”.
In an outlook for today and tonight, he said: “Winds are still forecast to increase into the gale force category today, especially across the exposed marine area and elevated/exposed parts of the island.”
Showers were also expected to develop.
The forecaster added: “Seas are still expected to increase very rough today and high tonight in conjunction with building easterly swells directly associated with Tammy.
“As already mentioned in the detailed public forecast, hazardous surf and rip tides will develop along exposed beaches/South Shore.
“A gale warning comes into effect this morning and continues through tonight.”
He said that “the most inclement conditions are expected during Friday with gale force north-northeast winds (35-46mph) and gusts to storm force (57mph) continuing”.
The outlook added: “During Saturday, conditions begin to improve with the gales and showers clearing to give a gradually better day.”
