Bermuda ends 2023 with 77.36in of rain
Bermuda’s wettest year in 121 years finished with the island racking up 77.36in of rain, according to the Bermuda Weather Service.
After a sunny start to 2024, the downpours continued yesterday with thunderstorms and powerful southwesterly winds sweeping across the island.
The BWS said that last May and November were the two wettest months on record since 1949.
Last year was Bermuda’s rainiest since 1902, when 89.24in in precipitation was recorded. Previously, 1962 held the record, with 75.42in of rain.
The island’s epic rainfall last year, which washed out events such as the Gombey Festival and damaged roads with widespread potholes, even managed to edge out England’s figures.
According to the Met Office, Britain as a whole got 11 per cent more rain than usual in 2023.
England was dealt its sixth-wettest year in the series of weather records dating back to 1836.
A country with a reputation for rain still fell well short of Bermuda’s weather stats: England got 1,045.4 millimetres of rain, or 41.15in.
Britain as a whole received 50.77in.
Bermuda’s wet and windy weather yesterday came from a “robust” low pressure system moving to the north, the BWS said.
More gales are likely late tomorrow, as another strong low moves through the region.
