Bermuda stands ready to assist Caricom countries affected by Hurricane Beryl in disaster relief efforts, the Government said last night.

David Burt made the commitment after attending an emergency meeting with Caricom Heads of Government on Tuesday.

At the gathering, regional leaders discussed disaster relief and restoration efforts taking place in the affected Caribbean nations.

The Premier said: “It was a solemn meeting, as we were all affected by the devastation that had been caused by Hurricane Beryl.”

He added: “During that meeting, Bermuda committed to assist the Caricom disaster relief efforts and relayed that Bermuda’s prayers were with all the countries in the Caribbean during this uncertain and difficult time.

“It was heartening to see all of us unite and galvanise our collective resources to assist our friends and neighbours in need.”

Mr Burt intends to seek Cabinet’s approval for a donation towards the relief effort.

The Government said $50,000 was set aside annually in the Budget for regional disaster support to Caricom countries if needed.

The Premier was scheduled to travel to Grenada from Wednesday to today for the 47th Regular Meeting of Caricom heads.

However, the meeting was postponed because of the threat posed by the storm.

Earlier this week, the storm caused catastrophic damage to the Grenadine islands including Carriacou and Petit Martinique.

It also caused major damage in Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

At least ten deaths were attributed to the passage of the storm.

It is expected to hit the Yucatan Peninsula today after weakening to Category 2 status.
