A family welcomed a baby girl into the world on Saturday — just as Hurricane Ernesto hit Bermuda.

Sarai Bailey was born at 8am to proud parents Stephanie and Keenan Bailey.

She is the new sister to her 18-month-old brother, Kaden.

A spokeswoman for the Bermuda Hospitals Board said that the couple were at home when Mrs Bailey’s contractions started at about 4am, four days before Sarai’s due date.

Mrs Bailey said that, despite living close to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, the family struggled to reach the emergency room because of road blockages.

She explained: “Thankfully the contracts started just as the eye of Hurricane Ernesto was coming over, so the winds had died down.

“Even though we live close to the hospital, however, we had to navigate roads blocked with trees to get in.”

Mrs Bailey added: “I was surprised at how fast Sarai was born. Just four hours after contractions started.”

Sarai arrived so quickly, in fact, that Mr Bailey actually missed her delivery.

He said: “Sarai was here before I even got back to the hospital from dropping off Kaden at my mother’s. When I walked back in, there Sarai was.”

Mr Bailey was unable to stay at the hospital because it was still in lockdown due to the storm and the second half of Ernesto was approaching.

But by Saturday night, he was able to return and spend time with his wife and daughter.
