Technicians working to fix weather radar

The Bermuda Weather Service said the Doppler radar system experienced a technical fault (Image supplied)

Technicians are working to fix the Bermuda Weather Service Doppler radar system but it was not known when it would be operational again, the BWS director said on Wednesday.

Michelle Pitcher noted that residents may see the system is down when they try to click on any weather radar product on the website of the service.

She said: “Technicians are working ,with the manufacturer on it, but we do not know when it will be back up and running.

“They are troubleshooting the issue.”

The problem arose last week when the BWS was tracking Hurricane Milton, which later downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone as it passed well to the south of the island.

In the absence of the radar system, Ms Pitcher said the BWS was using other tools and back-up systems to observe and report the weather.

She added: “We still have satellite imagery, local observations, our weather balloon and our lightning-detecting tools, to name a few, that are utilised to monitor weather conditions in our area.”

“Our website still has all this information available to the public as well.”

The weather radar system was officially launched in July 2019, replacing an older system that was installed in 2004.

After its installation, the newer system has experienced communication glitches and outages.
