Blustery showers and gale-force winds hit the island
Gale-force winds will continue to hit the island throughout this week after a deepening low-pressure centre formed to the west of Bermuda on Friday night.
Weather forecasters warned residents to stay informed and be prepared for conditions that could be “disruptive and worrisome”.
A Bermuda Weather Service advisory issued at 4.30pm today said that winds would come in from the west at strong to gale-force from late tomorrow.
The island was buffeted by strong winds throughout the weekend, until a lull this evening.
Once the wintry conditions pick up again tomorrow they are expected to continue well into the week.
In today’s 4.30pm update, the Bermuda Weather Service website said: “Conditions will settle slightly tonight as winds decrease moderate to strong and showers leave the area.
“On Monday, winds briefly decrease to mostly moderate, then gales return ahead of another cold front later Monday night. The front is expected to pass Tuesday morning with more showers. Winds and showers then decrease Tuesday afternoon and winds drop to strong again Tuesday night.
Michelle Pitcher, the BWS director, said: “A low-pressure centre will move off the US mid-Atlantic coast on Monday night and brings back gale-force winds once again.”
She added: “Winter gales are common for Bermuda and are understandably disruptive and worrisome.
“While there is a lot of emphasis to stay up to date on the forecast during the Atlantic hurricane season, it is important to stay informed year round so that everyone can be prepared for the expected conditions.
“BWS remains the official source of weather for Bermuda and we work 24/7, 365 days a year to monitor the weather and to make sure everyone is informed of the latest and forecast conditions.”
Its detailed forecast for tomorrow added: “Sunny breaks, a few evening showers, increasing later.
“Winds west-northwesterly moderate to strong, backing westerly moderate to strong towards afternoon, backing southwesterly by evening, then increasing strong in the evening and strong to gale force late night with gusts to gale force.”
The temperature high was expected to be 64F (18C) with a low near 59F (15C).
On Tuesday, the BWS said, residents could expect cloudy skies with early showers, decreasing around midday.
It added: “Winds southwesterly strong to gale force, gusts to storm force, veering westerly by noon, decreasing west-northwesterly strong to gale force with gusts to gale force by evening, then decreasing strong by midnight.”
The temperature high was expected to be near 69F (21C) with a low near 58F (14C).
Sunny periods were expected on Wednesday with one or two showers, increasing to a few overnight.
