If the Bermuda scenes don’t grab your attention, the music likely will. Runners Natalie Dyrli, Anna Laura Hocking, Nicole Andreasen, Emma Norman and Whitney Iuliano are Spice Girls characters in a fundraising video that’s had more than 1,000 views and tons of shares on social media since it was posted a few days ago.

The women ride mopeds, party in front of Chewstick’s Front Street flag and generally get up to all sorts of shenanigans, as the iconic band’s 1990s hit Wannabe plays in the background. They are joined by Anne Kermode, who portrays Queen Elizabeth II in Lucinda Spurling’s three-minute recording.

It’s all for a good cause. The group is headed to the UK to run the London Marathon on April 24 and, as Ms Dyrli explains below, they’re hoping the video will help raise the £1,350 commitment they’ve made to UK charity The Outward Bound Trust.

Q: How did all of you manage to get into the marathon in the same year? Is it easy to sign up?

A: It’s really difficult to get into. I’ve been in the [general] lottery for the past four years and not able to get in. Fortunately, the Mid Atlantic Athletic Club is given five spots; Catherine Mello worked really hard to get them and they had a lottery here locally. I got one of them and two of my girlfriends, Anne and Whitney, also got spots. I thought it would be really cool to run as the Spice Girls but obviously we needed a couple more people. My friend Emma then came up with the idea of running for charity. If you run for charity it’s easier to get in, but you have to raise £1,350. She’s running for the UK charity, Outward Bound, along with Anna Laura and Nicole. We thought it would be great if we all made a video to help them raise the money and spread the word. We later learnt that Steve Ortiz was also running for Outward Bound. If we’d known in advance he could’ve been in the video with us!

Q: Are you all experienced runners?

A: All of us have run marathons before. We train together every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in a group called The Weekenders but we’re all at different running levels.

Q: How are you preparing for the race?

A: Liz Craig puts out our route and helps us. We have 16 weeks building up mileage on weekends and shorter runs on weekdays. It’s really great to have a group to train with and support.

Q: Why the Spice Girls?

A: During my long runs, all I think about is my next event; I try to picture crossing the finish line. Because it’s London I thought of the Spice Girls, which worked out well because most of the girls fit their characters — Emma is so sporty; I have red hair so Ginger works; Anne is from England so she fits as the Queen; Whitney is Posh and Nicole is Baby. Anna Laura is the only one whose name doesn’t suit. She’s not really Scary.

Q: How’d you plot the video scenes?

A: I wanted to showcase Bermuda and the fact that we’re coming from Bermuda. So I thought of riding bikes and the beautiful flag Chewstick painted on Front Street. We wanted to jump off a cliff into the water but the weather didn’t work out. We originally wanted to film in November but put it off because it rained. Then Christmas came and then Race Weekend. We [eventually filmed it] last Sunday and we had a lot of fun. The one thing we took from the Spice Girls’ video was the stair scene — they do a little one too — but everything else was just kind of on a whim.

Q: Who filmed it for you?

A: Anna Laura’s sister is [documentary filmmaker] Lucy Spurling. She was kind enough to take a few hours on a Sunday afternoon and film for us, which was really great. It took about two hours to complete. The others have fundraising pages so we thought it would help if we got the video on Facebook to increase their visibility.

Q: Who styled you? Where’d you find the clothes?

A: In general, I run more for fun. I’m not super-competitive and I like to dress up for races. I dressed as Ginger Spice in a You Go Girls race two years ago so I already had my outfit. But [the others] really hit it out of the park. It was amazing what they came up with.

Q: Why’d they choose The Outward Bound Trust as their charity?

A: There’s a lot of charities you can go for but Emma’s dad is connected to Outward Bound Bermuda so it made choosing easier. We would have loved to support a Bermuda charity but it had to be a UK one.

Q: How does the Trust work in the UK?

A: It’s an educational charity that uses the outdoors to help develop young people from all walks of life. Through the generosity of their donors, they are able to run adventurous and challenging outdoor learning programmes that equip young people with valuable skills for education, work and life. Outward Bound helps them become more confident, more effective and more capable.

Q: What’s the response to the video been like?

A: Well that’s the thing. Nicole posted it on her Facebook page and got a ton of shares. After two days we had 1,500 views. We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response. We really were surprised at how well it was received and the positive comments that we have gotten from making it. It’s amazing how word spreads here. We also sent it to the Outward Bound Charity in the UK, and they said they can’t get enough of it.

Q: And the song, Wannabe. Still like it?

A: It’s a fun song. I did the editing. If I didn’t know every word in the song I did after three days of editing. Before we filmed, when I was out running, I had it on my iPod to help get ideas of how to film the video. I kept listening to it over and over. I found out only a few weeks ago that the Spice Girls are going on tour this year for their 20th reunion. So it was perfect timing.
