Celebrating a ‘remarkable journey of triumph’
As a fitness columnist, I believe in the power of personal stories to inspire and uplift.
Today, I want to share a remarkable journey of triumph and resilience as I mark two years this week since I had surgery to remove a benign pituitary macro adenoma from the base of my brain.
I have learnt a lot of lessons in the time since. Most importantly, I learnt to take charge of my health after what was for me, a life-altering discovery.
The emotions that flooded through me after hearing the doctor’s diagnosis were a mix of tears, fear, uncertainty, and determination. The decision to undergo surgery was not an easy one as it was my first surgery ever! However I knew it was necessary to restore my health and wellbeing.
The surgery itself was about four hours long and took place during the pandemic. It definitely tested my physical and emotional strength.
I was however surrounded by the support of medical professionals, family, and friends as I underwent transsphenoidal pituitary surgery where the neurosurgeon went through my nasal passage to access the tumour.
The road to recovery was slow, but through patience and self-care I regained my strength day by day.
The only real rehabilitation was making sure that I limited my exercise to walking and that I did not lift anything heavier than five pounds. Balanced nutrition and hormone monitoring played crucial roles in my recovery.
The impact on my mental and emotional wellbeing was undeniable. Managing stress, anxiety, and uncertainty required a steadfast commitment to self-care.
Throughout this process, I learnt to embrace self-acceptance, gratitude, and a positive mindset as essential tools for healing and returning to a new me.
Along the way, I discovered the immense joy in the simple things in life. Each day became an opportunity to appreciate the blessings of health, the support of loved ones, and the beauty of this island.
I also focused on new interests that fuelled my desire for a vibrant and fulfilling life.
Reflecting upon these last two years, I am filled with gratitude and a renewed sense of empowerment.
It is my hope that sharing this story will inspire others facing similar challenges. Each of us has the capacity to overcome adversity, and with the right support and mindset we can emerge stronger and more resilient.
Remember, your own journey is unique, and there is power in seeking support from loved ones, medical professionals, and the wider community. We do not have to hide what ails us.
Together, we can transform challenges into opportunities for growth and inspire others along the way.
As I celebrate two years since my benign macro adenoma surgery, I am reminded that life is a precious gift.
Let us embrace our health, cherish those we love, and begin each day with a positive attitude and plan to make the very best of it!
