Fitness, fun and Cup Match: a Somerset fan's guide to Bermuda’s best weekend

Enjoy the holiday: Dre Hinds writes that Cup Match is an opportunity to showcase your best beach body, or at least try to work off some of those celebratory fish dinners and swizzles (Photograph submitted)

As a proud Somerset supporter, I can confidently say that Cup Match weekend is Bermuda's answer to a fitness and wellness retreat — except with more cricket, fried fish, and vibrant camaraderie. If you enjoyed the Bermuda Day celebrations in May, which I was blessed to write about, with all its cultural and familial significance, you're in for a treat.

Cup Match offers the same cherished memories, wrapped in a two-day cricket showdown between the best team (Somerset, of course!) and, well, that other team from St George's.

For the uninitiated, Cup Match is Bermuda's annual cricket festival, a public holiday spanning Thursday and Friday, celebrating Emancipation Day and Mary Prince Day.

The fierce rivalry between Somerset (the heroes in red and blue) and St. George's (the “competition” in blue and … well, blue) dates back to 1902.

It’s a tradition steeped in history, pride, and good-natured banter. Somerset has been the reigning champion more times than the blue team, but who's counting? Well, everyone is counting.

But, Cup Match is not just about cricket; it's an opportunity to showcase your best beach body, or at least try to work off some of those celebratory fish dinners and swizzles.

How is fitness tied to this amazing weekend though?

Well, you already know Bermuda’s crystal-clear waters offer the perfect setting for a refreshing dip.

Between Thursday’s play and Friday’s first ball, hit up the famous Horseshoe Bay in Southampton, or the beaches around Mangrove Bay, Sandys, for a swim. It’s the best way to cool off and sneak in some exercise.

Perhaps, wander around the various stalls, tents, and vendors set up at the grounds.

Walking from one food stand to the next is hard work, and completing a lap of the stadium, going from camp to camp, is practically a sport.

With music pumping from morning ‘till night, you’ll find it hard to resist the call to dance. Whether it’s soca, reggae, or calypso, dancing burns calories and lifts spirits. It’s a win-win.

I always mention wellness and its importance during your journey. Cup Match time in Bermuda definitely had its place — reconnecting with family, friends, and the community.

Just like Bermuda Day, Cup Match is about making memories with loved ones.

The game is a backdrop for picnics, barbecues, and long-overdue family reunions. It’s a reminder that wellness includes our mental and emotional health, too.

There’s something profoundly grounding about being part of a tradition that has endured for over a century.

Take a moment to appreciate the heritage, the stories, and the sense of belonging that Cup Match fosters. And if the game gets tense, a few deep breaths and a gentle reminder that Somerset always prevails, can do wonders for your stress levels.

Cup Match embodies the essence of Bermuda’s community spirit. It’s a time when rivalries are put aside (mostly) in favour of unity and collective celebration.

Volunteering at local events, supporting small businesses, and participating in cultural activities enhance our sense of community and individual wellbeing.

As the day progresses there are some important points to note!

Stay hydrated, folks. It’s hot out there, and we need everyone in peak condition to cheer Somerset to victory.

So folks, Cup Match weekend approaches, get ready to immerse yourself in the best Bermuda has to offer.

Whether you're swimming, dancing, walking, or simply soaking in the vibrant atmosphere, remember that wellness is as much about joy and connection as it is about physical fitness. And if you happen to be a Somerset fan, know that every cheer, every laugh, and every shared moment makes this celebration of freedom and unity all the more special.

Go Somerset! Here’s to another victorious year and a weekend of unforgettable memories. Happy Wednesday, fitfam!
