Defying the numbers: ageing gracefully
Last week I turned 46. I really don’t feel whatever 46 is supposed to feel like. I feel I can still run, jump, an occasional handstand and headstand, however I might be a little nervous about a cartwheel!
Now, before you start thinking I’m delusional, let me clarify. I’m not suggesting I’m 25 again. But I do believe in the power of staying active and maintaining a youthful spirit.
Exercise is undeniably the cornerstone of ageing gracefully. It’s a fact often overlooked in our fast-paced lives.
Exercise tends to be the first thing to go when life gets hectic, but it should be the first thing on our to-do lists.
We all know the benefits of exercise: weight management, improved mood, increased energy levels, and reduced risk of chronic diseases.
But it's more than just physical health. Regular workouts can help keep our minds sharp and boost our confidence.
It’s like charging a battery; the more you exercise, the more energy you have to tackle life's challenges.
So, how do we fit exercise into our busy schedules? It starts with small steps. Perhaps it’s a brisk walk during your lunch break, a dance class in the evening, or a group workout class to push you a bit.
Remember, any movement is better than none. And let's not forget about the importance of strength training.
Building muscle mass can help prevent injuries and maintain independence as we age.
While exercise is undoubtedly crucial, there are other factors to consider when ageing gracefully.
Embrace your inner child: Remember that time you laughed so hard you cried? Or when you danced in the rain without a care in the world?
Reconnect with your playful side. It’s like a fountain of youth for your soul.
Cultivate a sense of humour: Laughter really is the best medicine. It can help reduce stress, boost your immune system, and even ease physical pain.
So, watch funny movies, spend time with people who make you laugh, and don't take yourself too seriously.
Prioritise sleep: This is a huge one! Beauty sleep is so important! Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.
Your body, your hormones and mind will thank you. Plus, you'll be less likely to reach for that extra cup of coffee.
Nourish your body: Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.
Cut out the excessive alcohol consumption or drop it all together. Your body is a temple; treat it with respect.
Find your passion: Whether it's gardening, painting, or learning a new language, having something you're passionate about can add purpose and joy to your life.
Just don't let your passion become an obsession.
Remember, ageing is a privilege. Let's embrace it with grace, humour, and a commitment to living life to the fullest. After all, if I can still do a headstand at 46, anything is possible!
