Beauty & The Wise: a guide through the ageing process
In her thirties, Kisha Tyrrell was surprised by the onset of menopause, a part of ageing that typically happens when women are a decade or more older. It’s a story she shares in the first episode of Beauty & The Wise, the podcast she launched a few months ago.
Part of its aim is to deliver a message: ageing can be a beautiful thing, it all depends on your approach.
“I’m redefining the narrative around what ageing well looks like for women in their forties and beyond. When you reach a certain age, society kind of puts you to the side and it’s at a time when the woman is going through so much ― from a hormonal health perspective, as well as her career, her family life and all sorts of stuff,” said the 47-year-old, who, in addition to the podcast has a full-time job in reinsurance and is the founder of Enzuri Beauty, a skincare line for men and women “that combines powerful active ingredients of natural origins to improve the quality of your skin”.
The collection encourages people to think differently; Beauty & The Wise is an extension of that effort.
“As women our hormones are constantly changing. Whether it’s puberty, pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause … at all those points in your life your hormones are doing something, and you will need to adjust. If you're not equipped it's going to be absolute hell for you,” Kisha said.
“You shouldn’t have to suffer in silence. You need to be able to advocate for yourself.”
The podcast shares the advice of “experts, insiders and friends” on lifestyle, wellness, personal growth and other subjects.
The hope is that people get the information they need to make their wellness journey smoother than hers once was.
“I had no idea [initially, that I was in menopause]. I was going to doctors and everybody told me, ‘You're too young; you’re just stressed,’” Kisha said.
Eventually she found “the right doctor”, Tiffany Keenan, who suggested she consider wellness from an holistic perspective. Suddenly everything made sense.
After launching Enzuri, Kisha began hosting “Beauty & Brunch events” to communicate the point that “how you feel shows up in how you look”.
“I didn't want to talk to an aesthetician, I wanted to talk about what sort of food should I be eating? What sort of things should I be thinking about in addition to skincare? And it kind of just branched from there.”
As was the case when she developed her skincare line, Kisha embarked on courses in nutrition and hormonal health to learn as much as she could so she knew “what to ask when [she needed] to see various people”.
Beauty & The Wise became possible after she won a pitch competition put on by Global Atlantic Financial Group.
“I used those funds to help grow some different products under the skincare line. I used some of the funding to help launch the podcast.
“So, I’m growing in different areas, but still on this holistic path of supporting women,” she said.
That others also put value in what she was doing became obvious as every single person she invited on her podcast was enthusiastic about joining her.
“When I asked, people showed up. People are already asking to be interviewed for Season 2,” Kisha said.
“The first couple of episodes, I kind of was thinking about what was I going through? My friends, what were they going through?
“What would they want to hear about? What topics do people need to know about that nobody wants to talk about but everybody's going through?”
Her early menopause was a good fit. At her second Beauty & Brunch the point was made that the perimenopausal stage could last ten years before menopause took effect.
“I was going through perimenopause when I was 35 and had no clue. And it's funny because now, in talking to my mom, she explained that she went through it early as well,” Kisha said.
“[Back then] nobody talked about menopause; they definitely didn't talk about perimenopause, that's for sure.”
People who have listened to the podcasts have reached out to her, grateful for the information.
It’s pretty much the same response she got when she launched Enzuri Beauty three years ago.
“I truly believed from the beginning, in this holistic approach to clear and clean skin,” she said.
“[The response] has been really good, and it's been interesting. I did a lot of pop-ups and attended different markets.
“People have invited me to their house for skincare parties to try out products and learn about creating routines and it’s given me an opportunity to talk to various types of people. So it has been really great and I have a lot of repeat customers.”
Her newest venture is skincare she created at the request of Bermuda’s males.
“All of my products are unisex but it’s funny, a lot of guys have approached me ― guys want their own products. And it's crazy because I tell them, you know you can use X, Y, Z that I already have, but they want their own stuff.
“So I'm launching three more products with men in mind but women can definitely use them and I think that they will also love them.”
