Seven tips to achieve your fitness goals

Now is the time: fitness expert Betty Doyling writes that by committing to regular exercise, you'll not only improve your physical health but also enhance mental wellbeing and overall quality of life

As we head into Christmas and the end of 2024, many of us are already thinking about how we need to cut back and the first place normally starts with our fitness. If your goal is to stay fit or get fit, now is the perfect time to start implementing strategies to make it happen.

Here are seven actionable tips to help you make time for exercise and achieve your fitness goals now and throughout 2025.

Creative budgeting: Allocate a small budget for fitness and explore affordable options like joining an outdoor fitness class, finding a gym that offers a class only membership to avoid paying monthly fees for services you are not using, shop in the sale section of your favourite athletic wear stores, and try and cook healthy meals at home.

Set realistic goals: break down your fitness goals into smaller, achievable steps. This will make them less daunting and easier to maintain.

Embrace small workouts: Even short bursts of exercise can have a significant impact on your overall health. Aim for 15-20 minute workouts throughout the day. Maybe one in the morning and one at night. Keep a list of quick exercises you can do at home, such as push-ups, squats, and lunges.

Find a workout buddy: Having a workout buddy can help you stay motivated and accountable. You can encourage each other and make exercise more enjoyable. Even if you are not attending the same class, you can definitely still message each other to hold each other accountable.

Make exercise fun: Don't get stuck in a workout rut. Try different activities like group classes, dancing, swimming, or anything that interests you. Workout to a playlist of your favourite songs to pump you up. It can boost your mood and make your workouts even more enjoyable.

Incorporate exercise into your daily routine: If possible, walk or bike to the ferry when going to work or take the stairs instead of the elevator. Take short breaks throughout the day to stretch, do some light cardio by walking to get your lunch or taking the stairs to the bathroom. Remember every step counts.

Reward yourself: Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Reward yourself with something you enjoy, such as a new workout outfit or a relaxing bath.

Remember, consistency is key. By following these tips and making small changes to your daily routine, you can make fitness a sustainable part of your life.

Start your fitness journey today and lay the foundation for a healthier, happier you in 2025. By committing to regular exercise, you'll not only improve your physical health but also enhance your mental wellbeing and overall quality of life.
